[Yamakasa Taboo] No Cucumbers🥒
"Hakata Gion Yamakasa" colors Fukuoka's summer
This is a dedication ritual at Kushida Shrine and is one of the three major festivals in Hakata, held every year from July SUN to SUN.
During the Yamakasa period, it is taboo for participants to eat cucumbers.
This tradition comes from the fact that a cut surface of a cucumber resembles the quince flower, which is the sacred crest of Gion (Susanoo-no-Mikoto), the deity worshipped in Yamakasa, and so people were reluctant to put one in their mouths as it was considered disrespectful.
During this period, our hidden popular menu item, "Pickled Mentaiko," will also be served with eggplant instead of cucumber.
Please enjoy the special menu only available during this period.
