In the Tenjin area, next to Nishinakasu where Ganso Hakata Mentaiju is located, a project called "Tenjin Big Bang" was launched in 2015 to renovate old and dilapidated restaurants.
The building is currently undergoing reconstruction work. Did you know that a shrine there is also scheduled to be relocated?
Located close to our store, Suikyo Tenmangu Shrine sits quietly in the business district of Tenjin.
Like Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, which is famous as the god of learning, Sugawara no Michizane is enshrined here.

This shrine is located right on the border between Nakasu and Tenjin.
There is an alley next door lined with restaurants with a retro atmosphere, making it a place where you can feel at ease even though it is in the city.

Suikyo Tenmangu Shrine was founded in 901 when Michizane Sugawara was demoted to Dazaifu for a crime he did not commit.
It is said that he looked at his own reflection in the water of the Shinkawa River and lamented at the sight of his haggard appearance.
In commemoration of this, a shrine was built in Shomura (present-day Imaizumi, Chuo Ward) and was named "Suikyo Tenjin" and "Yomi Tenjin".
He was called "God (Sugatamitenjin)."
Later, in 1612, it was moved to its current location, which is in the direction of Fukuoka Castle's evil spirits, and named "Suikyo Tenmangu Shrine."
Incidentally, "Tenjin" refers to Sugawara no Michizane, and the place name "Tenjin" in Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City, is derived from this Tenmangu Shrine.

The Tenjin area has changed a lot compared to a few years ago, but the people's lives and streetscape have remained in the same place for over 400 years.
Perhaps Suikagami Tenmangu Shrine, which has been watching over them, feels this even more.
