Mentai-ju News vol.20
As September arrives, the heat subsides and the wind becomes cooler.
There are a ton of autumn-themed events and festivals happening all over the place.
This time, we will introduce the Autumn Festival at Miyajidake Shrine, which has a history of about 700 years.
Miyajidake Shrine in Fukutsu City is the head shrine of the 14 Miyajidake shrines across Japan. The shrine enshrines the deity "Miyajidake Three Pillar Gods".
He is worshipped by people as a "god of good fortune who can overcome anything" who can grant any wish.
The Autumn Festival is a festival that has been held for about 700 years to give thanks to the gods for their blessings (bountiful harvests), and is also known as the "Hojoe" festival.
The highlight of the festival is the Goshinkosai on the final day, when a female entertainer is chosen each year to become the festival queen, dressed in a twelve-layered kimono, and attendees include priests in full caps,
A grand procession reminiscent of a picture scroll from the imperial court marches along the approximately 2km approach from the shrine to Miyajihama Beach.
Many tourists gather on the approach to the shrine to see a sight that makes them feel as if they have traveled back in time to the Heian period.
Another highlight is the "Wish-granting! Good Luck Fireworks Festival." People put their dreams and wishes into the fireworks and pray for them to come true. The fireworks, with their wishes inscribed on them, shoot up high into the sky and light up the night sky.
The Autumn Festival is held every year for three days from September 21st to 23rd under the clear autumn skies.
